Handspring Inc was formed in 1998 when two of the developers of 3Com's Palm Pilot secured funding
for their startup to develop handhelds based on the Palm Computing platform.
The company's
first PDAs,
the Visor and Visor Deluxe, shipped in Fall of 1999. The Springboard expansion
slot was a key feature of the new products and a major
development in the evolution of Palm-based handhelds as it allowed users to
conveniently add new hardware and software. Visors were also the first handhelds to support synchronization
via USB.
The Visor Platinum with 8 MB RAM was introduced in October 2000. The new model utilized the Motorola Dragonball
33 MHz processor, which made it the fastest Palm handheld available at the time. Handspring also introduced
the Visor Prism (with a color creen) in 2000; and the Visor Edge (with a super-thin design) shipped in early 2001.
The Visor Pro and Visor Neo were intorduced in September 2001. The
rechargeable Visor Pro, with
its 16 MB RAM, silent LED alarm, and stylish silver body was aimed
at professional users. Wheras the Neo was the new lower priced entry level model.

- Palm Operating System ver. 3.5
- 16 MB RAM
- 33 MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ processsor
- Blinking led alarm
- Backlit 160X160 grayscale screen
- Expandable Springboard slot
- Fast USB synchronizing for your PC or Macintosh, also Infrared.
- Includes USB cradle, Palm Desktop software, link to Microsoft Outlook, AC adapter, metal stylus
- Recharge in included cradle
Handspring Visor Platinum Features:
- Similar to Visor Pro (same processor, greyscale screen, and operating system),
but with 8 MB RAM, alkaline batteries, and no LED alarm.
